OUR LATEST PHOTOSHOOT

Members of Art Team and stylists from across the salon group took part in our latest shoot at The Old Hall which was photographed by Paul Gill. You may recognise our models who are all clients and friends of the salon and in Lydia’s case, have modelled in each of our photographic collections over the past five years! We always use models who we feel reflect our clients and produce looks which inspire you to try something new, from a peachy or pink tone to a shorter and more textured cut or bolder colour.

The make up for all models is by Chloe, Spa Therapist at our Ashbourne salon using High Definition.

This 70’s inspired copper is by Laura Robertson, Colour Specialist & Art Team member from the Belper salon. This shorter fringe looks fantastic on Rochelle and the styling compliments her colour perfectly.

This grunge-inspired look is modelled by Lydia who is currently on the cover of our Hair Guide in a much more polished looking image. Hair by Art Team Members Lizzie (Colour Specialist at Sadler Gate) and Deesh from the Duffield Salon.

Another look by Lizzie and Deesh. Ellie’s colour was transformed into a multi tonal but clean blonde and styled into a ‘faux bob’ for the shoot but it is actually shoulder length!

Alice and Imogen from Ashbourne enhanced Amy’s natural colour for maximum shine.

Katherine and Lorna from The Old Hall worked on this fantastic colour blend on Kirsty. They kept it smooth and straight on the final image so the colour technique can be clearly seen.

Last but not least is this fantastic work by Millie at Sadler Gate. We love the pink and peach tones which compliment Mabel’s skin tone and colouring.

YOUNG IDEAS FASHION SHOW

The Young Ideas Spring Summer fashion show was held at their Ashbourne store last month. Each season a team of stylists from across our salon group work backstage to prepare and then change the models hair between scenes to reflect the trends as the show progresses.

Young Ideas holds the popular show to present the key collections for the coming season from international designers such as Belstaff, Paul Smith, DVF, Escada, Essential Antwerp and many more. The collections are all modelled by customers, staff and friends of Young Ideas and we love getting involved each season. Our team for this show included Sally Montague, Lizzie (Sadler Gate), Deesh and Zea (Duffield), Serafina (Ashbourne) and Charlotte from The Old Hall. All images are by Charlotte Jopling Photography.

L’OREAL PROFESSIONNEL TRENDS

Inspired by the runway, below are the two emerging trends for Spring/Summer 2017. Emmy Rappe (left) wears the first new service, Foilyage, although this technique is showcased on copper it is great for blondes and brunettes too.

The second trend, modelled by the stunning L’Oreal Professionnel ambassaor, Hailey Baldwin (right), is Nude Beige, inspired by the ‘barely-there’ nude make-up trend.

These looks are perfect for spring and so easy to wear.

COPPER FOILYAGE

Copper is the colour of the season spotted on the latest runways of the likes of Alexander Wang. We are embracing this colour and paring it with a trending technique, Foilyage. Like balayage, which you might be familiar with, this is a technique where the hair colour technician would freehand paint lighter pieces into the hair. However, selected pieces are then wrapped in foils, creating defined lightness to blend seamlessly with the softer tones.

Although modelled on copper, this technique is perfect for blondes and brunettes alike.

DISCOVER FOILYAGE

The new adaptation of the Balayage technique, Foilyage, this technique gives the so desired ultimate natural-looking sun-kissed glow perfect for introducing that spring/summer vibe. The subtlety of this look brings beauty creating definition and dimensions in the hair throughout the front section, in particular the lengths and ends. The glossy perfection that comes with this technique avoids the need for a radical transformation involving heavy commitment. A palette of copper and golden shades are perfect for this technique to brighten up and warm any hair colour.

The increased popularity of the Foilyage trend across the runways, celebrity looks and the high street is contributed to by its low maintenance nature, like Balyage, this professional salon-only technique gives the chic look and feel good factor reducing the need to go to the salon every few weeks. What more could you want?

NUDE BEIGE

Inspired by the ‘barely there’ nude make-up look, this trend uses the beige hair colour palette playing with a blend of cool and warm tones making this look perfect for spring and easy to wear.

Your colourist will work with your face shape to really emphasise your natural features & highlight the face contour with the colour placement adding an effortless glow for a chic and natural-looking result.

Our team all took part in an education session on the new techniques with L’Oreal Professionnel, ask them about nude blonde and foliage on your next visit.

THE KEDLESTON COUNTRY HOUSE

In February we were asked to take part in a styled shoot and open evening at The Kedleston Country House which had a fantastic fiesta theme. We love looking for new hair ideas and this styled shoot was the ideal way to explore unique bridal looks. Lorna, our Senior Stylist at The Old Hall was assisted by Zea (Stylist at Duffield) on the shoot.

Robyn Carter, Weddings coordinator, said of the day…

“Here at The Kedleston we like to have a little fun with our open evenings and think it’s always a great opportunity to get fab suppliers involved in creating something different and unique. As much as we love the simplicity of our venue we wanted to show what you can do with a little colour and turmeric! So naturally, we gathered the best of the best together and thought up something totally different to what we’ve seen and done ourselves on other styled shoots.”

BACKSTAGE AT LONDON FASHION WEEK WITH LORNA

SHOW 1

On Friday at the Central Saint Martins show the aim was to create two specific looks. On short haired models a scrunched natural textured blow-dry and on long haired models a Moroccan inspired messy, matt wave. When I arrived backstage the lead stylist Adam Reed demonstrated how to achieve the long haired look by winding a models hair around a medium barrel tong and moving the hair back and forth to create the textured wave. There were 75 models at the show, both male and female, so it wasn’t long before the room was full and everyone on the styling team was busy working.

At the start of the evening I worked with another stylist on two long haired models. We used L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Beach Waves Styling Spray, Depolish Styling Paste and Scruff Me Styling Gel to create the Moroccan inspired messy, matt wave look. As the run through approached we began working individually. I worked on another three models, each time showing the lead stylist who approved every model and also complimented my work. The styling team were given the opportunity to watch the run through which was a particular highlight for me. I loved seeing the room set up for the catwalk as it made it all feel real.

After the run through, final adjustments were made to the models hair and then they got dressed in their outfits. I assisted anyone I could to help with the tight time schedule. Seeing the models dressed with their hair finished and ready in the line up was great as I could see the final look all come together.

SHOW 2: JW ANDERSON

On Saturday at the JW Anderson show there was only one look. A sleek, low side pony with an exposed ear that was demonstrated by Anthony Turner, the lead stylist. I overheard Anthony further explaining to a reporter that the look was of a poor little rich girl who was trying to fit in with the cool girls and that the exposed ear was a representation of the immaturity she still had.

The backstage at this show was a lot bigger but access was very limited so I didn’t get to see as much as I did at the Friday show. There was also a calmer atmosphere at this show as there were fewer models. Whilst working with another stylist I used L’Oréal Professionnel PLI Styling Spray at the roots of the models hair and Full Volume Extra Mousse through the ends as we blow-dried the hair into the desired shape. We had to glue in extensions (something I’ve never done before) and then we secured the hair with elastic and smoothed over the hair with Mythic Oil to give a glossy finish.

For the remainder of the show I assisted other stylists who were part of Anthony Turners team. Again, it was great to see all of the models dressed and ready to go on stage. After the show was finished I stayed behind to remove the extensions from the models hair.

I loved the experience of being backstage at London Fashion Week, it was so inspiring! Not only was it a great opportunity to increase and improve my skill set but it also gave me valuable experience working in a high-pressure environment. I got to appreciate first hand just how important team work is backstage, which is another aspect of the show that I really enjoyed. The shows have made me much more aware of the looks for next season which I will be able to bring back and showcase in the salon.

INTRODUCING PHD WAXING

belper-0018

We’re delighted to have introduced PHD Safewax to the Belper salon. The unique PHD Waxing System offers a treatment totally free of cross contamination. This is achieved through using the individually packaged applicator heads which are thrown away after your treatment, preventing cross contamination from one client to another. Its applicator head has a built in safety device to prevent the backflow of wax into the tube eliminating the risk of cross contamination.

Professional… hygenic… Disposable

For the best result…

There are lots of things to take into consideration to get the best results from your waxing.

1. The hair should not be touched for at least 4-6 weeks. This is because your hair is on a cycle, you may feel after a couple of weeks of not shaving your hairs are all their and are long enough, this is simply not the case. If we were to wax, yes we would remove the visible hairs, but the hairs that are not visible will then start to appear after a couple of days, making you feel the waxing hasn’t worked, not true, it’s just that those hairs are on a different cycle. Allowing 4-6 weeks will give the hairs the best chance to all come through.

2. Dry skin is another thing that will prevent you from getting the best result from your waxing. This is due to the fact that if you have lots of dry flaky skin, when we apply the wax, we are unable to get to the route of the hair, causing the hair to break off. Also, your skin will be covered in lots of tiny red spots, giving the appearance of a plucked chicken, which would not happen if your skin is prepared correctly. Prevention, by exfoliating your skin with a scrub and using a good moisturiser, will ensure your legs are in the best possible condition to give a smoother wax.

3. Do not have a hot bath just before being waxed. A lot of people feel they are doing the right thing, hoping to open their pores so that the hairs come out easier. Not true, this can actually cause your skin to be damaged during waxing, the reason is, when you soak in a hot bath, you are softening the top layers of skin, you go to have your waxing and warm wax is applied to the area, when the wax is removed, it will remove more skin than we would like, giving the skin the appearance of it peeling, that may slightly scab over. It will heal and shouldn’t cause any long term problems, but its best to have a quick warm shower to prevent any damage to the skin.

HALLOWEEN STYLING COMPETITION

On Monday we held a Halloween styling competition for apprentices and young stylists at The Old Hall. Each entrant had just 90 minuted to prepare their look before presenting a mood board and Halloween inspired model to the training team in just 3 minutes. The results were fantastic with Jessica from Ashbourne scooping the winning prize, Charlotte took second place with her Forbidden Forest inspired look and Millie came third with her black swan look modelled by her twin sister.  There were some very impiressive techniques shown across the board and we would especially like to thank all the models who were tranformed into a great of ghosts, cobwebs, a medusa and even a pumpkin!

LONDON FASHION WEEK

For LFW SS17 we were thrilled to send Lorna (Stylist at The Old Hall) to be part of the team styling the hair backstage with L’Oreal Professionnel. Assisting Darren Fowler, the pair worked on the ONOFF presents stage on the Friday of London Fashion Week, here’s what they got up to….

LORNA

I had an amazing experience at London fashion week, it was so inspiring! Working backstage was eye-opening, hectic and amazing all at the same time.

20160916_192747

Whilst there I worked with two models. First, I was shown what look to create by a leading stylist and then I recreated this low slicked back pony tail on the first model.

img_20160916_225514

For the second model, I collaborated with other stylists to recreate the same look that was used on the first model. Although this involved creating the same style, this time around presented new challenges due to the tighter time constraints as we rapidly approached the dress rehearsal.

Once my work with the two models was complete I was then asked to assist backstage to help prepare the models for the final show.

After a successful run-through I was given the very exciting opportunity to watch the final show. I loved watching the models walking down the runway knowing that I had contributed to their overall appearance. Working at London Fashion Week was such a gratifying experience and I cannot wait to get involved again.

20160916_192800

The atmosphere backstage at London fashion week was electric. It was such good fun to work with Lead Stylist Darren Fowler and the team of twenty stylists for L’Oreal Professionnel. We were quickly shown how to style three different looks which were all sleek and strong.

20160916_191844

Two of the styles incorporated different types of braids, whilst the third was a very sleek and low ponytail. The looks were simple but had great impact on the catwalk and could definitely be translated into the salon for our clients.
