FLYING INTO THE FINALS!

It’s a buoyant, entrepreneurial £6.9 billion-a-year industry that provides the heartbeat of UK high streets, and now Sally Montague Hair Group, Ashbourne, is poised to make history in the world of professional hairdressing after beating off nationwide competition to reach the finals of the prestigious Most Wanted awards, presented by leading industry magazine, Creative HEAD.

Established in 2001, Most Wanted celebrates the most accomplished individuals, teams and businesses in British and Irish hairdressing – the talents that lead the industry from the front, whether impressing with their creative skills, building business through teamwork or keeping communities alive and boosting local economies.

Sally Montague Hair Group, Ashbourne is one of five finalists in the Best Salon Experience category, earning a place at the Most Wanted Grand Final on Monday 2 September at Printworks – the atmospheric space that once delivered the Metro and Evening Standard newspapers to London. Here, with actor and comedian Aisling Bea at the helm, the hairdressing stars of 2019 will be unveiled.

Sally Montague Hair Group have seven salons across Derbyshire and the purpose-built Ashbourne site is the largest in the group. The site opened last June after eight years of design and construction and features a large salon, five treatment rooms, relaxation area and a studio for fitness classes.

“We are over the moon to be finalists, the Ashbourne salon continues to be a great success and now the focus is on building our team. There is really tough competition in both categories and we are delighted to be the only salon outside of London shortlisted in the ‘Best Salon Experience’ category – we built the salon around the needs of our clients and it’s great to be recognised in such a prestigious award.’

The Most Wanted awards comprise 14 categories recognising creativity and success across a multitude of disciplines, from customer service to business innovation. This year’s entries were judged by panels of experts including Gemma Bellman, director of Europe for Glossier; Navaz Batliwalla of Disney Roller Girl fame; Sonia Haria beauty director of the  Telegraph Group; Floral Street founder, Michelle Feeney; session stylists Ken O’Rourke, Tracie Cant, Johnnie Sapong and Syd Hayes; and industry influencers like Johanna Cree Brown, Jayson Gray and John Vial.

Alongside a coveted Most Wanted Trophy, this year’s champions will look forward to a year’s worth of profile-boosting editorial coverage in Creative HEAD and its associated titles, websites and events, resulting in worldwide recognition.

And success can be far-reaching – past champions have gone on to represent global brands, work alongside prestigious retailers, lead Fashion Week teams in London, New York, Paris and Milan and collaborate with the world’s most coveted designers. To become a Most Wanted winner really is career-changing.

“Most Wanted is the highlight of our year – an opportunity to lift the lid on the exceptional creatives and business thinkers who drive hairdressing to new heights. It’s where new talents are discovered and legends celebrated”Catherine Handcock, Publisher, Creative HEAD

CELEBRATING 2018

On Monday 14th January we invited the whole salon group to Ashbourne for our annual meeting and awards presentation.

We kicked off with an incredibly motivational session with Paul Fishwick, Commercial Development Manager at L’Oreal Professionnel, who inspired us with a workshop on customer excellence and the five star experience. We moved on to a presentation by Sally who reviewed everything that our business and team had achieved in 2018 while looking ahead to what is in store for the next year.

Next, the awards presentations highlighted the team members who had excelled in 2018. Competition is very tough and we only have eight categories so all of the winners and nominees should be incredibly proud. Congratulations to the entire team for making 2018 so fantastic!

LONDON FASHION WEEK SS19

Reporting backstage from London Fashion Week is Zea, our senior stylist from Duffield, with the latest hair trends.

The look- We were shown the finished look which was a slicked down middle parting with sandy texture through the ends of the hair

The How-to- For this we used a light spritz of water spray to create a precise middle parting, then applied Techni art siren waves. Using a dressing out brush I smoothed the hair so that it was tight and flat, then dried it and applied Techni art volume architect ensuring the hair was smooth throughout. Crepe paper was used to wrap around the hair to ensure the hair is kept together whilst we styled the lengths and ends. We were creating a wet textured look through the ends to do this we used Techni Art dual styler bouncy and tender in thick sections through the back applying a lot of product and diffused it until dry.

It was then time for the rehearsal, when the models came back I started on my second model and repeated the process until I got to the diffusing step. Then we hit a stumbling block as the electricity cut out 30 minutes before the models had to be dressed. As we were diffusing the hair there was nothing we could do until the electrics were fixed which was really stressful as the models hair was still wet! Thankfully they managed to get the electric back on so managed to finish the models on time.

I had great time working backstage and can’t wait to hopefully be back next season.

THE L’OREAL COLOUR TROPHY 2018

Three teams from our salons have made it through the first round and into the semi-finals of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award 2018. This means that they will now go head to head with salons at the North West Regional Semi-Final event on Monday 16th of April in Liverpool. The teams include stylists from the salons in Belper, The Old Hall (St Peters Churchyard) and Ashbourne who all took part in a photoshoot to create their entry images.

During the first round, hundreds of photographic images from across the country were judged by the most influential names in hairdressing, including Angel Montague-Sayers who is also judging the South West and Northern Irish heats. The salon group fought off stiff competition and were successfully chosen to go through to the next round of the competition – the Regional Semi- Finals.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES ATHLETES AT THE OLD HALL

Last week we were delighted to welcome the young Derbyshire athletes who have been selected to compete at the Commonwealth Games next month on the Gold Coast.

The athletes, their mums and team members from the Derbyshire Institute of Sport all enjoyed hair and make up appointments in preparation of their celebratory dinner at Seven restaurant on Pride Park.

Our stylists were on hand for blow dries while Leanne (Spa Therapist at Ashbourne) used Airbase make up to give the athletes a flawless make up application.

Airbase is applied using a spray gun and offers a light application with a long lasting and full coverage. It’s ideal for special occasions and so we knew it would be ideal to use for the athletes who were being interviewed on TV that evening.

The Derbyshire Institute of Sport was inspired by the London Olympic Games and was launched in 2012 as Derbyshire’s legacy programme. Although Derbyshire had produced champions in the past, their aim is to create a systematic model, leaving less to chance, and giving athletes the best possible chance of achieving their Olympic dream. You can find out more about the Derbyshire Institute of Sport here.
